We perform our school song for Tom McFadden

OOBLECK!

Mrs C had some stuff for us to explore.  She called it oobleck and we had to investigate it with our buddies.  She asked us to describe its properties so we had to use all our senses to find out about it.

After we had spent some time investigating we had to write down our discoveries.  We found that if you put your hand in slowly it is runny and liquid.  if you bang your hand down quickly, it is hard.  That’s pretty strange isn’t it?  We are going to do some more work with the oobleck next week.  Hopefully our buddies can join in again too.

Ruru

Here is some of the super sixers wonderful writing about the ruru we found at school last week.

The seniors found a ruru.  it looks like a bird.  It has bright yellow feet and a long beak.  it has brown wings and it is very, very soft and light.  Mrs C looked after the ruru in class today.

Caira

The seniors found an owl on the ground.  They showed Mrs C.  We got to hold it and it was soft.  It had sharp claws.  owls are nocturnal.  They eat moths and other insects.  They have black and blue eyes.  They have a sharp beak.  They fly fast.  They feed their babies out of their mouths.  their pinch hurts a lot.  they are fat.

Merina

The big kids found an owl.  The owl has two feet, long wings, long sharp claws and big eyes and a sharp beak.  I like moreporks!

Kade

Ruru are owls, ruru can see at night because of their special, glow in the dark eyes.  Ruru have razor sharp claws to hunt with so they can kill their prey as they fly to a good spot to eat.  Ruru are fast hunters because of their silent flight.  ruru have a sharp beak with a claw on the end.  They use the claw to break the bones.  Ruru wings can spread out so they can fly faster.  Ruru are beautiful with beautiful yellow spots on their wings.  Ruru have yellow and brown stripes on their bellies.

Rur, when they come to you, it means you are very special.  Rurus have a long tail to help them to fly.  ruru have little hairs near their eyes.  Ruru are very special birds.

Jason

A morepork is an owl.  It comes out at night.  If you leave your light on all the bugs come out and the owl comes out to eat the bugs.  The morepork has dark black eyes so they can see in the dark.  it has a sharp, sharp beak.  It has pretty, white, dotty spots.  The tummy is freckled.

We had a great visit from Tom McFadden, the science rapper.   The water cycle song and Fossil Rock were our favourites.  Thank you to the United States embassy for bringing him to Wellington and our kura.  Check out our video.  Mrs C thinks lots of us should enter science idol.......hmmmmm....we are thinking about it........

Using Think boards in maths

P5230054

This week we have been using thinkboards to help us explain our maths strategies in solving problems.  We have to write a story problem and show our strategy, use equipment, use symbols and draw out the problem.  We are getting better at using these.

Fantastic work Caira, Callum, Joshua L and Nabilah. Keep up the great mahi.

Kei te pouri koutou!

We felt pretty sad in Room 6 today as some of the children discovered a ruru (morepork) which had died.  Mrs C brought it into class and we said a karakia and then we had a chance to have a really good look at it.  Mrs C thinks it may have flown into a window and broken its neck.  We were surprised at how light it was and how soft its feathers were.  We wrote some descriptions about it which we will share with you later in the week.

Mrs C found out that we needed to report finding the ruru to the Department of Conservation.  She phoned to talk to them and is waiting to hear back.  They have lots of great information on their website.

We learned lots about the ruru.  It is a nocturnal bird and it comes out at night, that is why we don’t often see them.  We are lucky here in Stokes Valley as we hear them calling most nights.  Miss Hay and Mrs J saw a ruru on a tree outside Room 15 when they came to school early one morning.

The ruru had the most amazing patterns on its feathers and beautiful yellow feet with very sharp claws.

What a sad but very special experience for us.  A special taonga for us to share in.
